Cheapest Intercom Alternatives for Startups (2026): Real Pricing Compared

Some links are affiliate links: if you sign up through them we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our ranking. Full disclosure.

Disclosure: botorperson.com is reader-supported. Some links below are affiliate links (Tidio, Crisp, Chatbase, and others marked "Try"), meaning we may earn a commission if you sign up — at no extra cost to you. It does not change which tool we recommend. Tools without a program (Intercom, Fin) are plain editorial links. We have not run a hands-on lab test of these products; verdicts below are based on documented pricing, public capabilities, and real user reports.

Intercom's pricing is the reason most startups go looking for an alternative in the first place. As listed on intercom.com/pricing (seen 2026-05-30), seats run $29 / $85 / $132 per seat per month for Essential, Advanced, and Expert — and its Fin AI agent is billed at $0.99 per outcome on top. That per-resolution model is exactly what early-stage teams find frustrating: a busy month means a bigger bill, and the AI charges per outcome regardless of how the customer felt about it.

This guide ranks the cheapest credible alternatives for a small team, with every price verified against the vendor's own pricing page this week. We cover three paid budget options — Crisp, Tidio, and Chatbase — and two genuinely free tools worth knowing about.

The short answer: cheapest by use case

Crisp — cheapest predictable bill

Per crisp.chat/en/pricing (seen 2026-05-30): a permanent Free plan (2 seats), Mini at $45/mo (4 seats, ~$5 AI credits ≈ 90 automated conversations), Essentials at $95/mo (10 seats, omnichannel inbox, workflow automation builder, ~450 automated conversations), and Plus at $295/mo (20+ seats, ticketing, white-labeling, ~1,350 automated conversations).

The appeal for startups is the flat workspace price with unlimited contacts and no per-resolution fee — the opposite of Intercom's model. Where it gets criticized: pricing is per workspace with a seat cap per tier and an AI-credit cap, so the "unlimited" framing only covers contacts, not AI volume. If you need heavy automation you climb tiers fast.

Who it's for: a 1–5 person EU/GDPR-conscious team that wants one flat monthly number and predictable budgeting.
Skip it if: you expect thousands of AI-handled conversations a month — the per-tier credit caps make it less flat than it looks.

Try Crisp

Tidio — cheapest real free tier, best for e-commerce

Per tidio.com/pricing (seen 2026-05-30): the Free plan gives 50 billable conversations/month and 10 seats; Starter is $24.17/mo, Growth from $49.17/mo, then a large jump to Plus from $749/mo.

The catch CX leads should understand: Tidio's Lyro AI is billed separately from the helpdesk plan. Every account includes 50 Lyro conversations as a one-time, lifetime allowance — not a monthly reset. After that you buy a Lyro plan. Per Tidio's own definition, a "billable conversation" is an interaction that includes a message from a human agent, excluding unanswered and automated-only messages. The Free → Plus jump is also steep: there is little between $49/mo and $749/mo.

Who it's for: Shopify/e-commerce startups that want deep cart/order integration and a usable free live-chat tier.
Skip it if: you need predictable AI costs — the separate Lyro billing can quietly raise your spend, and crossing into Plus-tier needs jumps to $749/mo.

Try Tidio

Chatbase — cheapest pure AI bot (but not a full inbox)

Per chatbase.co/pricing (seen 2026-05-30): Free (50 message credits/mo, 1 agent), Hobby $32/mo (500 credits), Standard $120/mo (4,000 credits, adds help desk, voice/telephony), and Pro $400/mo (15,000 credits). Add-ons include $40 per 1,000 extra message credits and $1,188/yr to remove branding.

Important distinction: Chatbase is an AI agent you train on your docs, not a staffed live-chat inbox. Help-desk features appear from the Standard ($120/mo) tier. So it's the cheapest way to stand up a competent answer bot, but if you mainly need humans handling escalations, it's a complement to a live-chat tool, not a one-for-one Intercom swap on the low tiers.

Who it's for: a startup that wants a docs/website AI agent cheaply and already has somewhere for humans to take over.
Skip it if: your core need is a shared human inbox with clean escalation — budget for Standard or pair it with Crisp/Tidio.

Genuinely free options (editorial — no affiliate program)

Tawk.to — Per tawk.to/pricing (seen 2026-05-30), it bills itself as "100% Free" with unlimited agents and chat volume, live chat, ticketing, CRM, and a knowledge base. It earns money on add-ons: removing the "Powered by tawk.to" branding (price not listed on the page), an AI Assist add-on (price not listed), video/voice, and hired chat agents at $1/hour. The trade-off is branding on your widget and a less polished AI/automation story.

HubSpot live chat — Per hubspot.com/products/crm/live-chat (seen 2026-05-30), live chat and a no-code chatbot builder are free "with no credit card required," with chats logged into the free HubSpot CRM. It's a strong $0 choice if you're already in (or open to) the HubSpot ecosystem; the cost shows up later as you get pushed toward paid Hubs for advanced features. These two have no affiliate program with us; we link them plainly because they're the honest free answer.

Honest verdict: best under $50/mo, for whom

Against Intercom's seat + $0.99-per-Fin-outcome model, all five remove the per-resolution meter that makes a busy support month expensive. For most early-stage teams that's the whole point: a number you can predict.
